This presentation will educate audiences of the importance of acoustic design; review the history of room acoustics; introduce basic acoustic concepts and surfaces; and talk about the future of acoustic design with the purpose of creating favorable experiences for occupants that can be conducive to learning, improve productivity and foster a sense of well-being.
Learning Objectives:
Acoustic environments affect how we work, play, heal and learn. Room acoustics is a field with a rich history and an exciting future. Sound acts like a complicated wave with a large range of scales and magnitudes. The properties of sound are measured in a variety of ways to simplify this complication into a usable form. All surfaces are acoustic and exhibit a combination of reflection, diffusion, absorption, and transmission. Acoustic design is most successful when the materials, techniques, and integration with non-acoustic performance are all in harmony.
Presenter Bio:
Zackery Belanger’s work is driven by the integration of acoustics into architecture. He holds M.S. degrees in Physics (Oakland University) and Architectural Sciences (Rensselaer). From 2002 – 2010 he consulted and developed acoustic geometries and materials for projects such as Rensselaer’s Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center [EMPAC] in Troy, NY and Royal Festival Hall in London, UK. In 2013 he was named the inaugural Researcher-in-Residence at EMPAC, where he began development of a new framework for the design and assessment of acoustic architecture. He founded the Detroit-based studio Arcgeometer in 2015.
